Inside Book:

If you look out of your window in a clear dawn on the French Riviera you may, if you are fortunate, see, far away to the south, a faint mountain range hanging on the sea, and if you do see it, it is a sight so beautiful that you will never forget it. The mountain range belongs to Corsica, and under its shadow was born the most wonderful man the world has ever seen—Napoleon. In the year 1769 two babies were born in widely distant places, both destined to spend the best years of their lives in a life and death struggle with each other. The birthday of Arthur Wellesley, afterwards Duke of Wellington, was on May 1, and his home was an Irish castle; while Napoleon Buonaparte saw the light in a small house in the little town of Ajaccio, in Corsica. Napoleon's ancestors came over from Tuscany early in the sixteenth century, and found in the island a large number of colonists like themselves, some Italian and some Greek, but all of them seeking refuge from the foreign armies which for fifty years had been trying to parcel out Italy among themselves. Though distant only a few hours' sail from its coasts, the inhabitants of the island were as different from those of the mainland as if the whole world lay between them. In Italy men were lazy, yet impulsive, lovers of beauty, of art, of literature, and of luxury; in Corsica they were gloomy, silent, watchful, living hardly, careless of everything which had not to do with their daily lives. Their hatreds were not only deep and strong, but lasting. As in old Rome, it was the rule that he 'who slew the slayer' should himself be slain, and these blood feuds never died out. No wonder that a traveller was struck with the sight of nearly the whole population wearing mourning. Almost everyone was related to the rest, and in almost every family one of its members had recently fallen a victim to avendetta—what we call a 'blood feud.' Periods of mourning were long, too, often lasting for ten years, sometimes for life. So the country was dismal to look at, with the high bare mountains shadowing all. While in Italy things moved fast, and new customs seemed best, in Corsica they seldom altered. The father was in some ways as absolute over his wife and children as in ancient Rome. He gave his orders and they were obeyed, no matter how hard they might be or how much disliked. His wife was not expected or wished to be a companion to her husband or a teacher to her children. Even if a lady by birth, like the mother of Napoleon, she worked as hard as any servant, for there was little money in Corsica, and people cultivated their ground so that they might have produce to exchange with their neighbours—olive oil for wine, chestnuts for corn, fish for garments woven by the women, from the hair of the mountain sheep or goats.

Book Summary:

Peggy Orenstein, acclaimed author of the groundbreaking New York Times bestsellers Girls & Sex and Schoolgirls, offers a radical, timely wake-up call for parents, revealing the dark side of a pretty and pink culture confronting girls at every turn as they grow into adults. Sweet and sassy or predatory and hardened, sexualized girlhood influences our daughters from infancy onward, telling them that how a girl looks matters more than who she is. Somewhere between the exhilarating rise of Girl Power in the 1990s and today, the pursuit of physical perfection has been recast as the source of female empowerment. And commercialization has spread the message faster and farther, reaching girls at ever-younger ages. But how dangerous is pink and pretty, anyway? Being a princess is just make-believe; eventually they grow out of it . . . or do they? In search of answers, Peggy Orenstein visited Disneyland, trolled American Girl Place, and met parents of beauty-pageant preschoolers tricked out like Vegas showgirls. The stakes turn out to be higher than she ever imagined. From premature sexualization to the risk of depression to rising rates of narcissism, the potential negative impact of this new girlie-girl culture is undeniable—yet armed with awareness and recognition, parents can effectively counterbalance its influence in their daughters' lives.

Book Summary:

The Book of Princes and Princesses is a collection of fourteen true short stories, each centered around a European monarch, including Napoleon, Elizabeth I, Fredrick the Great and more. Though these figures seem larger than life, The Book of Princes and Princesses portray them as real, relatable people who struggled to achieve greatness, and sometimes failed anyway. Following the monarchs’ rise to power and childhood, this collection depicts the rulers’ faults, struggles, and triumphs, highlighting the diverse circumstances of power. Napoleon Bonaparte serves as an example of this, as he rose from poor status to be a great emperor and a celebrated war general. However, these achievements are challenged at the Battle of Waterloo. Though appropriate and enjoyable for all ages, The Book of Princes and Princesses by Andrew and Leonora Lang was originally meant for children. Seeking to spark natural interest in history, The Book of Princes and Princesses depicts celebrated European authority figures with originality and honesty. Through the portrayal of fourteen rulers, this collection allows readers valuable perspective and insight on European culture throughout centuries of historical and religious movements. This edition of The Book of Princes and Princesses by Andrew and Leonora Lang now features a striking new cover design and is printed in a font that is both modern and readable. With these accommodations, this edition of The Book of Princes and Princesses creates an accessible and pleasant reading experience for modern audiences while restoring the original authenticity and mastery of Andrew and Leonora Lang’s work.

THE PRINCESS AND THE GOBLIN CHAPTER I WHY THE PRINCESS HAS A STORY ABOUT HER THERE was once a little princess who-''But, Mr. Author, why do you always write about princesses?" "Because every little girl is a princess." ' You ivill make them vain if you tell them that." ''Not if they understand what I mean." ' Then what do you mean?'' 'What do you mean by a princess?'' " The daughter of a king." Very well, then every little girl is a princess, and there would be no need to say anything about it, except that she is always in danger of forgetting her rank, and behaving as if she had grown out of the mud. I have seen little princesses behave like the children of thieves and lying beggars, and that is why they need to be told they are princesses. And that is ivhy, when I tell a story of this kind, I like to tell it about a princess. Then I can say better what I mean, because I can then give her every beautiful thing I want her to have." "Please go on."

One by one the sky’s matchless jewels, the stars, peeped out, studding that great ceiling with flashing diamond-points, until the whole dome was a glittering mass of blue and silver. Calm and majestic the Moon glided over her star-studded pathway; but, in spite of her glorious beauty and brilliancy, she was really sad and sick at heart. Ethelda, her best beloved, the youngest and dearest of her children, had just made a request the granting of which caused her that night bitterest sorrow. Ethelda had asked no less than this: to visit the Earth and spend her honeymoon there! Prince Dorion came with a great retinue of knights, all dressed in shining gold wrought in the Sun’s fiery furnace, and bringing wonderful jewels to his bride. The Moon Queen, not to be outdone in magnificence, showered silver in plenty upon them both, and bade one hundred of her loveliest maidens accompany the bridal pair upon their journey. And so they set off across the heavens on their way to Earth….. But what adventures await the young couple? How will the little folk, the fairies, like this? Will the Prince and the Princess’ brilliance overshadow Earth’s Fairy King and Queen, annoying them, or will they be welcomed with open arms? Book Summary:

Recommended Age: From 9 to 99 years old. From the moment they were conceived in the mind of a writer, Bella and Griselda have been doomed to live out their days as mere characters in a book. One day, they decide to wrest control of their lives—if only for a day and a half—and, in so doing, risk changing their fates forever... The Awakening is the story of their adventure, the story of two princesses who rebel against the canons of their fairy-tale world and set out in search of their dreams. On the way, they learn new lessons, discover their true selves, and inspire others to change. The story of Bella and Griselda is the story of us all, of what we should do each and every day: open our eyes wide and live in accordance with what we are and what we feel, not with arbitrary conventions and mores. It is a charming, fun and defiant tale of friendship for anyone looking to cast off stereotypes and clichés and realize that we are so much more than the princes and princesses that populate the fiction of our childhoods and continue to be held up as role models even when we are adults. This book is part of the Forgotten Colors collection. A share of the proceeds from its sale will be donated to the NGO Children of India.

Book Summary:

This is the story of “Sara Crewe”. But, stories are something like letters and a great deal more had happened at Miss Minchin’s than anyone actually realised. In this story there was a little girl whose name was Lottie, who was an amusing little person; there was a hungry scullery-maid who was Sara’s adoring friend; Ermengarde was much more entertaining than she had seemed at first; things happened in the garret which had never been hinted at in the book; and a certain gentleman whose name was Melchisedec was an intimate friend of Sara’s who should never have been left out of the story, even if he had only walked into it in time. He and Becky and Lottie lived at Miss Minchin’s. They were as real as Sara, and it was careless of them not to come out of the story shadowland and say, “Here I am—tell about me.” But they did not—which was their fault. People who live in a story, ought to come forward at the beginning and tap the writing person on the shoulder and say, “Hallo, what about me?” If they don’t, no one can be blamed but themselves and their slouching, idle ways. But what actually happened at Miss Minchin’s? Well you’ll have to download this book and read all the happenings for yourself. 10% of the profit from the sale of this book will be donated to charities. ---------------------------- KEYWORDS/TAGS: A Little Princess, Sara Crewe, Lottie, Miss Minchin’s, Lottie, Ermengarde, Garret, Melchisedec, shadowland, wealthy, losses, poor, beggar, French Lesson, Becky, Diamond Mines, Attic, Indian Gentleman, Ram Dass, Other Side, Wall, Heard And Saw, Magic, Child, Anne, not dreaming, abashed, tea-party, children, crowded, clamoured, cry, sparrows, twittered, hop, beggar girl, huddle, in the corner, gazing into the fire, World War 1, WWI,New York City, daughter, Captain Richard Crewe, movie, play, film, aristocrat, India, cook, Mabel, servant, locket, Charles Randolph,
