All the same people who lived on the street the day Abi vanished… Will her mother finally learn the truth? Ava only left her daughter in the pushchair for five minutes. The buckle was fastened, and she was sure it was safe. But when she came downstairs, the door was open and Abi was gone – she walked down the road, past the Lovegoods’ house, and was never seen again. A year later, the Lovegoods are planning their long-anticipated housewarming party. Ava doesn’t want to go. She can’t bear to look down that end of the road, to see the place where Abi vanished, and she doesn’t want to spend time with people who don’t share her grief. Her husband Matt persuades her: he’s worried about her. A night out might do her good. But as her friends and neighbours chat, and the drink and gossip flows, Ava learns something new about the day she has re-lived a thousand times. A throwaway comment which could change everything. Book Summary:

Over forty years ago the British Government warned the Italian Government; "Don't trust the Russians." The author was there. Today, forty years later, Newsweek echoes the same warning to any country that puts its energy sources at the political whim and fancy of Mr. Putin. And what of the warnings that the United States Government was given over sixty years ago that Mao-Ze-tung was not the 'second coming of the Messiah'? The author was there. And he seethed in rage and torment as he tried to sleep on the steel deck of a United States evacuation LST while he heard the 'Messiah's guns laying siege to Beijing. But all good things come to an end, even the bad ones, and meeting the Queen of England at the Prime Minister's residence, The Temple Trees, in Ceylon and issuing an invitation to His Royal Highness to play polo more than compensated the author for his first evacuation. But the reasons for his second evacuation from Cairo and his family's evacuation from Beirut are not quite as clear as he would like. Hearing about them might give the reader some thoughts about the difficulties faced by their fellow citizens who serve them abroad.

At ten years old, she didn’t yet understand why her stomach tightened when she heard her father’s heavy tread as he returned home late at night, or why it made her brother Graham’s stammer get worse, or why one night her mother Carol woke them both, wide-eyed and whispering, and took them out of their home and into the unknown. Now a successful lawyer in the city, with a life poles apart from her dark beginnings, Nicola has returned home for her mother’s funeral. But as she stands in her mother’s house, remembering the woman who sacrificed everything for her children, Nicola has to confront the guilt that she feels for leaving her family behind. And the belief that she played a part in the events that led to her brother going to prison for murder. All Carol wanted was to protect her children, but escaping her husband was only the beginning of the story. And when Nicola learns the truth of what her mother did, it will change everything she thought she knew about herself and her family. Book Summary:

To students of Indian Culture interested in tracing the influence of India in the institutions of her Cultural Colonies, as also to Anthropologists, the Religious Festivals and Court Ceremonies, which still remain the most characteristic features of Siamese social life, offer an important field for research. Yet the subject has been little touched by scholars. Therefore a pioneer work of this nature can only be regarded as an attempt to lay a foundation for further studies, and the author hopes that other students—particularly those Siamese possessed of an extensive knowledge of their own literature and customs—may be encouraged to endeavour to fill those gaps which remain in our knowledge of most of the Siamese State Ceremonies. Book Summary:

In the 1800s, the lives of persons in the entertaining industry, specifically theater, were often as dramatic as the characters’ lives in some plays by Samuel Beckett, Anton Chekhov, Henrik Ibsen, William Inge, Arthur Miller, Thornton Wilder and Tennessee Williams. If You Ever Meet a Weasel by Belinda MacGruder is one such dramatic story. Historical fiction, this novel details the lives of theatre people who travel from Europe to the New World. This novel’s main character must tolerate her father’s traditional attitudes toward marriage. She must accept the separation from her European friends when she moves to the New World. Of course, New World customs are different from European customs. As such, this novel’s female, main character must learn New World customs while retaining the Old World ones. Natural and manmade tragedies afflict most, if not all, of the characters in If You Ever Meet a Weasel. Highly unusual events occur. Personality conflicts vie with conflicts of interests. A famous American war disrupts the lives of some of the characters. Travel to and from the European continent stresses relationships and relatives. However, this novel contains more than tragedies, conflicts and turmoil. Tender moments occur between spouses. Understanding develops among friends. Between employers and employees, friendships emerge to last lifetimes. In dialogs and expositions, the author references historical dates and events. For the readers, these historical events emphasize characters’ personalities, create empathy, explain difficulties and inspire imagination. This novel’s timeline ends in the 21st century. From beginning to end, readers will read about various transportation methods: horse-drawn carriages; steam-powered, ocean liners; taxis and train travel. If You Ever Meet a Weasel is an insightful, but fictional, literary experience into theatrical lives.

Book Summary:

‘Wow, just wow.’ ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐, Goodreads reviewer ‘Blew me away and I'm still gasping for air.’ ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐, Goodreads reviewer ‘Totally jaw-dropping.’ ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐, Goodreads reviewer ‘Had me on the edge of my seat.’ ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐, Goodreads reviewer ‘One of the must-read books of the year. I could not put this book down.’ ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐, Goodreads reviewer The night she moves in with Peter, she’s so happy, so exhilarated, so in love. Later, she will remember a much smaller feeling, a tiny one percent in her gut. And she will remember pushing that feeling aside… Samantha Frayn doesn’t know why Peter Bridges picks her – a nobody with bitten fingernails and a troubled childhood behind her – but she falls quickly. He’s older, charming, likes fine wine and French films, and his beautiful home has real art on its walls. Peter transforms Samantha’s life in an instant. He sees the better version of herself – the one she’s always wanted to be. It’s only normal that there’s a little friction, when she moves in, over domestic matters like where things are kept, or the proper times to eat, sleep and shower. She’s lucky to be with someone who can help her find a new job, move on from childish friends, and speak with greater sophistication. But as Samantha notices, more and more, Peter’s temper, she starts to wonder if there might be consequences to breaking the rules of the world he has so quickly built around her. And then she receives an anonymous note that makes her ask: is she the first woman to feel trapped by Peter? Is she being paranoid, manipulated, or could she be in danger? You can tell the truth about your life, but someone needs to be listening. Someone needs to trust you. And someone needs to save you from the man you thought you loved. Book Summary:

Elaine Smith lived in the small coastal town of Sabal Palms long enough to know when to worry about a squall and when to simply close the windows and wait for it to pass. This one would be significant. It would be significant in terms of damage, but that was to be expected. What no one expected was the profound effect it would have on the lives of people from the Texas coast to New York City. Positive qualities of humanity are often displayed during times of natural disaster. But a supernatural power had attached to this storm and subsequently worked within the hearts of the most needy, the most lonely, and the most sinister. The lives of four delightful women, a homeless teen, a rebellious son, a grieving lover who is at the bottom, a son who lost his faith, and a hired murderer are all intertwined in the aftereffects of a Category 3 hurricane thanks to a few passages written by one determined woman.

Book Summary:

Sarah and Abraham (Abe) Klein lived ordinary lives for most of their existence. There were the ups and downs, money troubles, sickness, and disappointments, but nothing uncommon. It changed in their golden years. They’d become wards of the court, so to speak, or, better said, pawns in the struggle between their daughter, Abigail and son-in-law, Zaki. In the process, they’d lose their freedom and their lives. Supported financially by their daughter, and living under her roof, they became the subjects of pity. They also became defenseless in the face of attack by their son-in-law. From: PEACEFUL LIVES STRETCHED TO THE END So begins one of Elias Sassoon’s stories in The Sassoon Society. Sassoon is often humorous, usually thoughtful, and always entertaining in these enchanting tales.

Book Summary:

“Of all his many regrets, it was his decision to write his memories that Avram Cohen now regretted the most” Thus begins An Accidental Murder, the latest book in Robert Rosenberg’s acclaimed Avram Cohen mystery series. In a tale that takes the retired Jerusalem detective from Germany’s Frankfurt book fair to the Negev desert, as he searches for a murderer in Germany and ends up in the dark netherworld of the new Russian mafia in Israel, Avram Cohen is revealed as never before—a man with a complex past that makes his future most uncertain. Someone wants to kill Cohen—or so it seems—possibly because of something he wrote in his memoir about his year as an avenger assassinating Nazis after his long-ago liberation from the Dachau concentration camp. But then his longtime protege Nissim Levy is found murdered on the road to Eilat. Is this a revenge killing somehow aimed at Cohen, or as Nissim’s former assistant believes, could the Russian mafioso be involved? From private nightclubs where mafia kingpins entertain with vodka-drenched feasts to massage parlors where the women work with cold-blooded professionalism, Cohen’s search for Levy’s killer becomes a twisted journey into a new side of Israel hardly known to the outsider. On the way, Cohen must look back at his own guilt before he can unveil a killer with a misguided but nonetheless profound motive for murder. This finely drawn novel is, like all the Cohen novels, a portrait of a deeply complicated man trying hard to be moral in a world where greed rules. Building an atmosphere of personal pain and paranoia up until the very last pages of the book, Rosenberg gives us a tour de force.

Book Summary:

D. L. Moody once heard Henry Varley say, "The world has yet to see what God will do with a man fully consecrated to Him. Moody was struck to his soul and, when the words would not leave him, responded, 'By God's help, I aim to be that man.'" When God called Avery to follow him as a true disciple, Avery knew he must make a similar commitment or remain a mediocre Christian for the rest of his life. His surrender and his filling of the Spirit initiated a spiritual life of impact with global results. Avery Willis is well-known, especially within the Southern Baptist denomination, for his involvement in movements of God over the past fifty years. Avery Willis's obedience to God led him to be a church planter in the United States and to strive for indigenous church planting in Indonesia, where he served as a missionary. He was a pioneer and leader in spiritual renewal, disciple-making, decentralized theological education, global mission partnerships, and chronological Bible storying. He is a well-known author, most notably of the MasterLife discipleship materials. This biography-written memoir-style through his own journals, letters, and newsletters to his intercessors-recounts Avery's life journey, his spiritual encounters and struggles, and the daily habits that Avery demonstrated as a disciple. It is less about his greatest moments than the personal daily choices to follow God with all his heart. It is the story of a man committed to God's purposes and passion to bring "as many people of the world as possible" to God's redemptive grace in Jesus, regardless of the cost.

Book Summary:

Matthew Bourne and His Adventures in Dance is an intimate and in-depth conversation between the prize-winning pioneer of ballet and contemporary dance Matthew Bourne and the New York Times dance critic Alastair Macaulay. In 1987, a small, aspirant dance group with a striking name made its debut on the London fringe. In 1996, Adventures in Motion Pictures made history as the first modern dance company to open a production in London's West End. From this achievement, AMP sailed triumphantly to Broadway - winning three Tony Awards - guided by Artistic Director Matthew Bourne. Even before the inception of AMP, Bourne was fascinated by theatre, by characterization, and by the history of dance. In his early works - Spitfire, Town & Country and Deadly Serious - Bourne brought a novel approach to dance. And in his reworkings of the classics of the ballet canon - Nutcracker, Swan Lake, Cinderella - Bourne created witty, vivid, poignant productions that received great acclaim. In the first decade of the new millennium, the company name was changed to New Adventures, and Bourne's 'classics', as well as Bourne's new works - The Car Man, Play Without Words, Edward Scissorhands and Dorian Gray - achieved levels of box-office popularity that have seldom, if ever, been matched in dance. In addition, his choreography for various musicals - My Fair Lady, Mary Poppins and Oliver! - have run for years in the West End and on Broadway. The detail in which Bourne discusses his work with Alastair Macaulay is unprecedented. The two explore Bourne's upbringing, his training and influences, and his distinctive creative methods. Bourne's notebooks, his sources and his collaboration with dancers all form part of the discussion in this book.

Book Summary:

The elevator door opens. A cow stands inside, angled diagonally to fit. It doesn’t look uncomfortable, merely impatient. “It is for the housewarming ceremony on the third floor,” explains the woman who stands behind the cow, holding it loosely with a rope. She has the sheepish look of a person caught in a strange situation who is trying to act as normal as possible. She introduces herself as Sarala and smiles reassuringly. The door closes. I shake my head and suppress a grin. It is good to be back. When Shoba Narayan—who has just returned to India with her husband and two daughters after years in the United States—asks whether said cow might bless her apartment next, it is the beginning of a beautiful friendship between our author and Sarala, who also sells fresh milk right across the street from that thoroughly modern apartment building. The two women connect over not only cows but also family, food, and life. When Shoba agrees to buy Sarala a new cow, they set off looking for just the right heifer, and what was at first a simple economic transaction becomes something much deeper, though never without a hint of slapstick. The Milk Lady of Bangalore immerses us in the culture, customs, myths, religion, sights, and sounds of a city in which the twenty-first century and the ancient past coexist like nowhere else in the world. It’s a true story of bridging divides, of understanding other ways of looking at the world, and of human connections and animal connections, and it’s an irresistible adventure of two strong women and the animals they love.

Book Summary:

This collection arises from the Fifth International Scientific Conference, “Language and Speech in Synchrony and Diachrony”, held in Taganrog, Russia, devoted to the memory of Russian linguist and philosopher Professor P.V. Chesnokov. It examines the functioning of different levels of linguistic units and categories of speech with regard to intra-and cross-cultural communication in pragmatics of speech. The theory of language and speech is represented not only in synchrony, but in diachrony, in the comparative and typological aspects of languages from various groups, including non-literate Yenisei languages. A further subject of discussion within is the problem of translation, and the relation of language and speech, text and discourse. The volume consists of six parts: Part I: Language and its grammatical categories in diachronic aspect; Part II: Grammar and other subsystems of the language; Part III: Cross-cultural communication and translation; Part IV: Problems of linguistic and diachronic typology; Part V: Pragmalinguistics and speech; and Part VI: Text, discourse, speech in anthropocentric paradigm. The book will be of interest to scholars of philology, linguistics, culture and humanities, as well as those interested in issues of language, culture and language teaching methods.
